Post #5 - Academic Word List (AWL)
Topic # 1
For the long weekend, I went snowboarding with my friends. We waked up at 5:30 pm and we went to Lake Louise. First, we did snowboarding and I tried to make jump, but it was rarely hard so I felt down many times. After snowboarding, we went to hot spring. We've stayed there for 1 hour and I was soothed by it. then, we went back home. After I went back home, my body was rarely hurt and I was so tired but it was so much stuff. this is one of my unforgettable memories in Canada.

I had never heard about Academic Word List (AWL) before I learned this in our class.
Here is a link that helps you understand what AWL is.
I think it is definitely difficult to use in academic writing, but I suppose that it helps you to make much better academic writing.

Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing
These common techniques used to work other people's words and ideas into your writing are quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing.
What is it?
1, Quoting
-Using the author's exact words. Always cite it and use "quotation marks."
-While paraphrase and summary are effective ways to introduce your reader to someone's ideas, quoting directly from a text allows you to introduce your reader to the way those ideas are expressed by showing such details as language, syntax, and cadence.
2, Paraphrasing
-Restating, in your own words, the author's words or ideas without altering the meaning or providing interpretation. Paraphrases are about the same length as the original.
-while a summary will be shorter than the original source material, a paraphrase will generally be about the same length as the original source material.
3, Summarizing
-Condensing the author's words or ideas without altering the meaning or providing interpretation—you use your own words for this. Basically, presenting the original information in a nutshell.
-When you summarize, you provide your readers with a condensed version of an author's key points. A summary can be as short as a few sentences or much longer, depending on the complexity of the text and the level of detail you wish to provide to your readers.
Here are some cites that you can study.

Japan's culture of deciet
In Japan, there is a principle: uso mo houben- " laying is also a means to an end." Not telling the truth isn't sometimes rude. Almost all of my friends describe Japanese personality as polite, respectful and kind. Why could they describe as that? First of all, In Japanese culture, there are words "Honne and Tatemae." Honne is your real feeling and Tatemae is the façade or the face we show in public. It's important to use Honne and Tatemae in some situation. As usual, we don't lie maliciously. for example, in company we have strong pecking order and we always praise superior outright. The more we show positive behavior to our superior, the more we build a good relationship with them. There is no foolproof way to live with others in Japanese society. Also, Even if senior person do some elusive things, it's better not to say rude words. The more offensive the behavior, the more difficult we are accepted by others. Regardless of this Japanese habitualness, The majority of young age people are getting to forget Tatemae. The more we forget our culture, the less positive aspect of Japanese culture. I suppose that it is unacceptable that we deceit someone as a concealment, on the other hand, it's important to understand "Honne and Tatemae." The more sensitive you are, the more you could be Japanese.

Dear my Parents and Grandparents
I'd like to express my grateful for your help. I have played soccer since I was 6 years old and I always played soccer. When I was a junior high school student, I joined 2 teams to practice soccer. After I finished playing soccer at a junior high school, I went to play soccer in another team. my grandfather always has picked me up at a junior high school and drove me off at another field. It took half an hour and even though I was sleeping while he was driving, he's always drove me. I really appreciate it. Also, my parents always cheered me up when I was depressed because I lost a game. they also always made me lunch and drove me off to play soccer. I was really happy for your support. Now, I understand how you are important. you always gave me love. I won't forget your help ever.

Self introduction
Hi, everyone. My name is Daigo Yagi and I'm 21 years old. I've been Calgary for 9 months. Now, I'm a second year college student in Japan. The reason why I decided to go study abroad is because I wanted to change my mind and more concentrate on study English. Now, I want to be an English teacher in high school in other countries. I choose Calgary because my mother recommended to go Calgary. I didn't know about Calgary a lot, but now I know about Calgary and I really like Calgary. Even though it is incredibly cold in winter, we have a lot of activities to do. After I go back to Japan, I will recommend my friends to visit Calgary.

I choose "watashitachi" for my Narrative assignment. "Watashitachi" means "us" so this song is about relationship between man and women. The reason why I choose this song is that I have same experience about this song. I had a girlfriend when I was a high school student. However suddenly she dumped me and she send me this song. I remember I was crying. Also, when I was a first year college student, I started dating with another girl. One day, she said she likes this song. I believed this occurrence is coincidence. Finally, after I came to Calgary, I fell in love a Canadian. However, she said she likes this song. I was scared about same occurrence and when I listen this song, I feel special. I feel depressing, on the other hand, I feel happy. This son is really special for me.
